Getting Started: How to Make Individual Apple Crisps

You’ll find the complete, detailed recipe card with precise measurements at the very bottom of this post. But first, let’s go over the equipment and ingredients you’ll need, along with a general overview of the steps to prepare these delightful single-serve treats.

Essential Equipment for Crafting Your Crisps

Having the right tools makes baking a breeze. Here’s what you’ll need to prepare these individual apple crisps:

  • Food Processor: This is key for quickly creating the perfect crumbly texture for your crisp topping. It saves time and ensures a uniform mixture.
  • Saucepan: A small saucepan is essential for simmering your homemade coconut caramel sauce to the ideal consistency.
  • Spatula: Useful for mixing ingredients in the saucepan and gently stirring your crumble mixture.
  • Jars: The star of the show! I highly recommend using 4oz wide-mouth mason jars. The wide mouth design makes it significantly easier to layer the ingredients and ensures that spoons can comfortably reach the bottom when it’s time to enjoy your crisp.
  • Baking Sheet: You’ll need this to place your assembled jars on, providing stability and catching any potential drips during baking.

Wholesome Ingredients for a Healthier Indulgence

This recipe is designed to be naturally vegan and gluten-free, provided you use certified gluten-free oats. It’s also entirely refined sugar-free, relying on the natural sweetness of coconut sugar. For those looking for an even lower sugar option, consider substituting brown sugar or golden monk fruit in place of the coconut sugar.

For the Irresistible Crisp Topping:

  • Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats: These provide the classic chewy texture and a good source of fiber. Ensure they are certified gluten-free if needed.
  • Pecans: Adds a rich, buttery crunch and healthy fats to the topping. You can also use walnuts or a mix of nuts if preferred.
  • Cinnamon: The quintessential spice for apple desserts, bringing warmth and a cozy aroma.
  • Coconut Sugar: A natural, unrefined sweetener that gives the crisp a lovely depth of flavor similar to brown sugar.
  • Coconut Oil: When solid but softened, it binds the crumble perfectly. Ghee, vegan butter, or grass-fed butter are all excellent alternatives if you prefer.
  • Apples: The star fruit! Use your favorite variety. Tart apples like Granny Smith offer a nice contrast to the sweet caramel, while sweeter apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji will yield a softer, sweeter crisp. A mix of varieties often creates the most complex flavor.

For the Creamy Coconut Caramel Sauce:

  • Canned Full-Fat Coconut Milk: You’ll specifically want to use the thick coconut cream that separates and rises to the top of a chilled can. This creaminess is vital for a rich, luscious caramel. (See notes in the recipe card for more detail on this!)
  • Coconut Sugar: This natural sweetener contributes to the beautiful caramel color and deep, molasses-like flavor of the sauce.
  • Vanilla Extract & Sea Salt: Vanilla enhances the sweetness and adds depth, while a pinch of sea salt balances the flavors and prevents the caramel from being overly sweet.
  • Cinnamon: A touch of cinnamon in the caramel sauce further enriches the fall-inspired flavor profile.

Note on Coconut Allergies: If you have coconut allergies or simply prefer not to use coconut milk, you can easily substitute with a different caramel sauce recipe or a high-quality store-bought vegan caramel alternative. The goal is deliciousness, however you achieve it!

Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Individual Apple Crisps

Get ready to create these adorable and delicious treats! The full recipe with precise measurements and timings is available in the recipe card below, but here’s a clear overview of the process:

1. Prepare the Wholesome Crisp Layer:

  • Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a food processor, combine all the dry crisp ingredients: old-fashioned rolled oats, pecans, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt.
  • Pulse for about 30 seconds until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You want a crumb-like texture, not a fine powder.
  • Add the softened coconut oil (or your chosen fat alternative) to the food processor and pulse a few more times until it’s just incorporated and the mixture starts to cling together slightly. Be careful not to over-process.

2. Simmer the Irresistible Caramel Sauce:

  • In a small saucepan, combine the coconut cream (from the top of a chilled can of full-fat coconut milk), coconut sugar, vanilla extract, and a good pinch of sea salt. Stir these ingredients together until well combined.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally.
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the caramel simmer for about 5 minutes. This allows it to thicken slightly, developing that rich, gooey consistency. It won’t be super thick like store-bought caramel but will thicken further as it cools.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and set the caramel aside while you assemble your jars.

3. Assemble Your Jars of Delight:

  • Lightly spray the inside of your 4oz wide-mouth mason jars with a little cooking spray or coconut oil to prevent sticking and make serving easier.
  • Now, it’s time to layer! For a beautiful presentation and balanced flavor in every bite, follow this layering sequence for each jar:
    1. A spoonful of the crunchy crumble mixture.
    2. A layer of diced apples.
    3. A drizzle of the warm coconut caramel sauce.
    4. Another spoonful of crumble.
    5. More diced apples.
    6. A final, generous layer of crumble on top.
    7. Finish with another drizzle of caramel sauce over the top of the crumble.

4. Bake to Golden Perfection:

  • Carefully place your assembled jars onto a baking sheet. This makes them easier to transfer in and out of the oven and catches any potential overflows.
  • Bake for 25 minutes, or until the tops of the crisps are beautifully golden brown and the apple mixture underneath is bubbly and tender.
  • Once baked, carefully remove the jars from the oven using oven mitts. Let them cool on a wire rack for a bit. They will be very hot! Allowing them to cool slightly allows the caramel and apples to set a bit more.
  • These individual apple crisps are best enjoyed warm. Before serving, a dollop of whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a spoonful of coconut yogurt makes them extra special! Enjoy your homemade, healthier treat!

Expert Tips for the Best Individual Apple Crisps

To ensure your individual apple crisps are nothing short of spectacular every time, keep these expert tips in mind:

  • Best Served Fresh: While apple crisp jars are undoubtedly best served on the same day they are baked for optimal texture and flavor, leftovers can be stored. Simply cover them tightly and refrigerate for up to 2-3 days. When you’re ready to enjoy, a quick reheat in the microwave for about 45 seconds will bring them back to life, warming the apples and softening the caramel.
  • Elevate with Toppings: The warm crisp is delicious on its own, but a cold topping truly takes it to the next level! Consider a generous dollop of creamy vanilla ice cream (dairy or non-dairy), a cloud of homemade whipped cream, or a scoop of coconut yogurt or Greek yogurt for a tangy contrast. These additions provide a delightful temperature and texture contrast that enhances the entire dessert experience.
  • Garnish for Extra Flair: For an extra touch of elegance and crunch, reserve a small handful of pecans from your crumble ingredients. Roughly chop them and sprinkle them over the top of the baked crisps just before serving. This adds visual appeal and a fresh nutty flavor.
  • Making Ahead & Reheating: If you plan to prepare these apple crisps ahead of time (e.g., for a party), you might notice that the middle layers settle or sink slightly after cooling. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about! Just reheat them gently in the microwave or oven until warm and bubbly again. Reheating will restore their comforting warmth and texture. Then, add your favorite fresh topping just before serving to maintain its integrity.
  • Apple Choice Matters: Experiment with different apple varieties to find your favorite. Granny Smith apples provide a tart counterpoint to the sweet caramel, while sweeter apples like Gala or Honeycrisp offer a more mellow and uniform sweetness. A blend of both can offer a delightful complexity.

Cook Time: 25 mins

Total Time: 40 mins

Course: Dessert, Snack

Cuisine: American

Keywords: apple crisp, apple pie, apple pie jars, healthy apple crisp, healthy apple pie, single serve apple crisp, vegan apple crisp

Ingredients

Crisp Topping

  • 1-2 apples of choice, diced
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup pecans
  • 6 tbsp coconut sugar
  • ¼ cup solid, but softened, coconut oil or butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract & pinch of sea salt
  • 1 ¼ tsp cinnamon

Caramel Sauce

  • ¾ cup coconut cream from the top of a can of full-fat coconut milk*
  • ¾ cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract & good pinch of sea salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a small saucepan, combine all of the caramel ingredients, mixing well. Place the pan over medium heat and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, letting it simmer for 5 minutes or so to thicken up just a bit. Then remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Make the crumble by combining all of the crisp ingredients besides the oil or butter in a food processor. Process for 30 seconds or so, until it creates a crumb-like texture. Then add in the oil or butter and pulse until it’s mixed in.
  4. Spray the jars with spray oil. Then layer as follows: crumble, apples, caramel, crumble, apples, crumble, caramel.
  5. Place the jars on a baking sheet and bake for 25 minutes or until the tops are golden and bubbly. Remove from the oven. Let cool for a bit before topping with whipped cream. Enjoy!
  6. If you make these ahead of time, the middles might sink a bit – that’s okay! Just reheat them prior to serving, then top with whipped cream!

Notes

*You’ll want to scoop out the coconut cream from the top of the can, then you can use the liquid to reach ¾ cup, as needed! If you open your coconut milk and the cream hasn’t solidified to the top, it’s okay! Just use a fork to kind of whisk up the milk inside the can so it all incorporates evenly, then measure!

If you can’t have coconut, feel free to use another caramel sauce recipe or store-bought caramel sauce.
